Gospel Songs Don't Fall In Love In Spain Why Can't She See? Come Down Heroes On Deaf Ears Changes What A Fool Cold Wind Steal Your Love Away Father Time Thinkin' 'Bout You Wonder What You're Doing? Burbank Blues As a kid growing up in Tennessee, I was able on occasion to visit a small Black Gospel Church near my neighborhood. The music changed my way of thinking about church for sure! This song is a reflection on the memories of that experience. While this may sound like 'just' another love song, it's actually a rather unique twist on some feelings I had about a male friend who was going to be leaving the U.S. and returning to Spain. Ironically, he now lives in Berlin! This song (for some mysterious reason) can apply to all of my past loves. On the surface this song is about a close friend who doesn't get that I have such a crush on her. Underneath it all it's about just not being understood for who you are. I have this interesting philosophy about roles models, leaders, and heroes: If you're not close enough to talk, hug, kiss, or share a beer or a cup of coffee, then I pass, otherwise, come on down! This song is written about a friend that I have always had a crush on. She's one of the most amazing women to ever walk this planet. Her acute deafness combined with my partial deafness made for some odd moments and lots of laughs. This is my token to my once secret crush! I have always enjoyed this song. This is one of the songs that got this whole project going. I has always surprised me that a song I wrote in one of my more frivolous moods would be appreciated by so many people. Thank you my 'friend down in the golden state'. This song title says it all. If there's one thing we can count on it's change. There's a verse about a girlfriend, a job, and just change in general. Who knows maybe the song itself will change! When you've spent much of your life trying to outgrow your foolishness, you may as well capitalize on it, ey? Hopefully, I will outgrow this song before someone can make it my epitaph! "Refreshingly under produced, Gene Deal's song, "Cold Wind" sets a scene. The fiddle's moan perfectly accompanies the catchy guitar work, and the lyrics send you on along a well structured, vocal path....you can almost feel the chill!"
-Karen E. Reynolds, Writer's Block, WDVX, Clinton, TN This is my tribute to my criminal record (if I were going to have one). It has been described as a metaphor out of control, but then isn't that what love is like sometimes? I wish I could remember who I wrote it about! This song started as an experiment in what Songwriter Magazine referred to as James Taylor's chord economy. I was just having fun and somehow this song grew out of it all. This is one of only two songs ever written (by me) about my x-wife. There aren't many things more difficult than moving on from a situation in which you spent half of your life. Sometimes it works just to sing your way through it! For reasons that I hope are obvious, this is one of my favorite songs. It was one of those moments in time that just came out, no edits or rearrangements, just the raw spontaneous feeling of an experience from my past.
