Last weekend I picked up a new ICOM IC-V85 Handheld 2 meter radio. I am really enjoying this development of my explorations into amateur radio.
My decision to go ahead and get a VHF handheld was motivated by a couple of things: 1) 2 of my co-worker are VHF users, 2) my experience at the Skywarn vigil last fall, 3) portability, and 4) local radio networking.
Unlike HF frequencies, the VHF are 'line of sight' and rely predominately on repeaters which means the transmit distances are shorter, the signals are much cleaner (for a variety of reasons), and it's generally more affordable so more people can participate. While like any other amateur radio activity, VHF has a focus activity on local emergency communications and let's not forget 'rag-chewing' (talking in general) with the locals.
This is a great way to meet local 'operators' and learn more about the hobby. It's also a great excuse for me to take a break and meet some new people. Check the blog and watch for new links.
